2021 has been a difficult year for many across the continent. There’s an old adage that the best music is derived through pain.

And perhaps that’s part of the reason why 2021 is setting up to be a good year for rap and hip hop music across Africa.

With so many standout releases across the continent African acts are starting to come out of their shells post the pandemic as the world is starting to open up.

A-Q – GOLDEN

GOLDEN, is an intimate masterpiece made up of 7 tracks which sees A-Q curving out a lane for himself with his soul bearing lyricism and touching on deep subjects like spirituality and social injustices.

“Keeping the bone straight but there’s a fracture within. You can’t cover it with all the fashion you’re in.” A-Q always shows plenty of rawness.

Known for his tack sharp pen game A-Q does not disappoint as he once again lays all his musical arsenal to bare. Golden definitely ushers in his purpose.

Kweku Smoke – Snoop Forever

The 49 minutes project houses 16 songs with features from high rated acts like Sarkodie, Kwesi Arthur, Nigeria’s Dammy Krane and Emtee to mention a few.

The Ghanaian rapper launches the offensive with this boiling debut album, dedicated to his late brother.

A cold journey through the West African ghettos, told by one of the prominent lyricists out right now.

25k – Pheli Makaveli

Talented Pretoria rapper 25k has finnaly delivered his much awaited debut album to the delights of his fans.

Curated by the talented Zoocci Coke Dope, the album lives up to expectation.

25k has carved a lane for himself with soul bearing lyricism that touches on deep subjects like pain and overcoming hardships.

With impressive lineup of the tracks and highly acclaimed list of features including SA hip hop heavyweights A-Reece and Emtee.

Sarkodie – No Pressure

Sarkodie released his new LP No Pressure featuring a star-studded affair that contains collaborations with Vic Mensa, Giggs, Kwesi Arthur, Cassper Nyovest and more over 15 tracks.

The project was led by the singles No Fugazy, Coachella, and Vibration.

No Pressure is a musically diverse effort which lands quite well. It’s aided by top-notch production work, an intentional move from the rapper, as he’s credited as one of two co-executive producers.

 The no pressure achieves its objective and arguably one of the best offerings to date from the Ghana rap star.

Priddy Ugly – Soil

Priddy Ugly leads rap revival in South Africa with Soil as he lays all his musical arsenal to bare and proves why he is one of the most respects acts on the continent.  

The album carries a sound that has less of 808s. And sees the East rand rapper opting for a more neo soul approach as he spreads out his African consciousness.

SOIL sees Priddy Ugly stamping his authority delivering astute rapping and lyricism that we have become accustomed to and somehow he found a sweet spot to balance his raps and hooks as he proves his versatility as well.
