Spread the love

Impulse Africa Magazine Team recently caught up Natasha Chansa Zambia’s fastest rising budding star following the release of her highly acclaimed debut EP titled The Genesis.

With her highly impeccable penmanship and hunger to continually push the envelope a lot can be expected from the rising rap star going forward as she continues to stake a claim in the music scene in Southern Africa.

  1. Briefly tell us about your journey as a musician so far?

It’s been quite insightful and overall interesting. I started my journey in 2018 with a single titled ‘Need Your Fire’ and it pretty much rolled out from there. But ever since that release, every other day there’s something new to learn, understand and apply.

I have been privileged to have some wonderful people around me that understand the vision, so overall it’s been amazing.

2. How would you describe your sound?

Because of my ability to sing and rap, I am in between Hip-Hop and Afro-pop so I think Afro-pop suffices

3. How has the process of establishing your own core sound and style been?

I feel like I am a product of my musical influences growing up. That kind of made it easy for me to find a sound because most times I would listen to music, I would myself I want to sound like this or make music like this.

So in mimicking other artists, somehow I found what works for me.

4. Where do you draw your inspiration from as a musician?

I draw my inspiration from various things but the most obvious one would be from experience.

As I am going through life I understand that the whole world is going through it too, so when I write, I write about honest experiences that I know someone out there is definitely going to relate to and hopefully they feel less alone.

I also write from other people’s experiences, when they share with me, it easy to write from their perspective.

Sometimes other people’s art inspires me, sometimes it’s just a word, sometimes it’s a moment from a TV show, and the list goes on its endless.

5. Your latest project, what was the inspiration behind it?

The Genesis was a way of me solidifying what I stand for, who I am and showing a glimpse of what I’m able to do. For me, I understood the power I have within me, the grace I move with and I put that into lyrics and melodies, the best way I can express myself.

6. Have you noticed any difference in the way people consumed your music during and after the lockdown?

The lockdown allowed for us to easily reach our global audience. Of course there’s a huge difference in how music is being consumed but I’m glad the doors are open now for us to reach more people.

7. As an upcoming artist what would you say is the most important lesson you have learnt so far?

Having a vision for myself is the most important thing. Consistency in practice and perfection, I will not stop learning or get comfortable despite people showing me support, if I know I can be better or improve or learn more, l won’t waste that opportunity.

Having the right people beside me is a blessing people that understand the vision too.

8. Three things people do not know about Natasha?

– I have crazy sinuses despite being able to sing well.

– I wear vision corrector glasses because I’m short sighted.

– A lot of people meet me and say “You’re shorter in person” so just to put it out there I’m like 5’4

9. What can your fans expect from you for the remainder of 2021?

More outreach from me to them and not the other way round

10. What are you most grateful for right now?

Right now, I can’t even begin to list down what I’m grateful for, that’s how much I’m grateful for.

The list will be endless but to mention a few.

I am grateful to God, he’s guiding my steps, protecting me, elevating me & using me as vessel so I can be an inspiration to other people, so their light can shine too.

I am grateful for my team- A huge shout to my manager Bwalia Nkumbula & my producer Trudon Shinkombwe. (Church Ulukuta).

I am grateful for my family, how supportive and present they are. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I am grateful to each and every person that’s taken the time to listen to and further more show the love and support.

I’m also grateful to you for having me on your platform.
